design to enrich travelling experiences

for NS (Dutch Railways)

What if… a crowded train could actually improve your travelling experience?

We designed an app quizzing you and fellow train passengers on the landscape you are travelling through.

NS set a challenge: design a social intervention to counteract the common annoyances related to crowded peak times in trains.

Although research shows that social interactions during train commutes result in a more positive travelling experience, travellers usually prefer a quiet over a crowded train. Even if a train at peak times is bursting with potential social interactions. More commonly this is viewed as a discomfort.

How would an overcrowded rush hour train contribute to a positive travelling experience?

Waarmakers teamed up with NS - Dutch Railways - to research and design a concept aiming to encourage interactions with fellow passengers, focusing on the rich context of surrounding landscape and diversity of the people traveling.

Aiming to spark interaction with other travellers, and giving the surrounding landscape centre stage, we designed a GPS-based quiz app to be exclusively played while aboard the train: Spoorwijs - spieken mag. Testing travellers’ (local) knowledge, motoric skills, spatial orientation… and ability to cheat :). Competing with and against other travellers, or even teaming up with a full train to compete against the train going the opposite direction.

2. DESIGN FOR interaction with fellow travellers

The quiz is played individually and in randomly assigned teams.
Travellers can choose to focus on individual gameplay, or open up a little more to identify and interact with team members.

The quiz starts after leaving the platform, and all competing will be asked the same questions at the same time.
Different types of questions in the app require physical actions; looking inquisitively left and right, balancing one’s smartphone, or aiming the

the smartphone in a certain direction - perhaps even directly towards an unsuspecting fellow passenger. The silent understanding between seemingly unrelated travellers to simultaneously act weird sparks curiosity. And for those in the know; recognition.
